Are there any toxic chemicals in leachate? How long will leachate be monitored after the landfill closes?

Leachate is the moisture that percolates through the trash in the landfill. Leachate is contained, collected, and treated on-site. The residue of this treatment process is then shipped off-site for ultimate disposal. Leachate contains compounds found in household waste and non-hazardous industrial waste. Leachate would be harmful only in the event it were to be ingested directly into a human body in significant quantities. But since leachate is collected in a closed system, the chances of exposure are minimal.
