FAQs
Is any radioactive waste being disposed of at the landfill?
Conestoga Landfill does not accept any high-level radioactive waste such as plutonium, uranium, or any other fissionable material. DEP allows us to accept materials with low levels of radioactivity—materials in consumer products, such as smoke alarms and batteries. These do not pose any risk to landfill employees or the environment and essentially disintegrate in a matter of weeks. We maintain a monitoring station to check all inbound waste vehicles for radioactive materials that fail to meet DEP criteria. When such materials are found, they are segregated and transported to an approved waste disposal facility.
