What are the economic benefits created by the operation of Conestoga Landfill?
We generate an estimated $26 million per year in economic benefits. We serve more than 12,240 customers in 48 municipalities in Berks County, and we are designated by the Berks County Solid Waste Authority to handle more than 60 percent of the county’s municipal solid waste through 2014.
We pay approximately $5 million a year in host fees to Berks County; close to $2.5 million in host fees to New Morgan Borough; $50,000 per year in host fees to Caernarvon Township, with an additional $50,000 per year, pending expansion approval; and $50,000 in host fees to Robeson Township, which will increase to seven cents a ton in future years, pending expansion approval. We make an annual payment of $100,000 to the Berks County Solid Waste Authority, and, under an agreement reached in 2005, we will be making an annual payment of $100,000 to Berks County to help pay for recycling programs, air-quality programs, or similar environmental programs.
We offer free waste disposal service to nearly 100 residents in the immediate area, and free sweeping of nearby roads. In addition, we provide tens of thousands of dollars through contributions and in-kind services to local charitable and civic organizations.
On an annual basis, we contribute 40 jobs, a payroll of $1.6 million, and $300,000 in wage and property taxes. We spend more than $5 million a year on goods and services.
