The economics may be positive, but aren’t landfills bad for the environment?

The whole purpose of a landfill is to protect the environment. Landfills are a form of pollution control, the pollution being the waste we—all of us—generate. Scientifically designed and engineered landfills were developed to replace the unsafe and unsanitary town dumps and incinerators that we once used.

Speaking of being environmentally friendly, Conestoga someday will be a source of alternative “green” energy. We’re working with a company that is planning to use the gas from the landfill to generate electricity and also to provide fuel to industrial tenants in an area to be developed next to the landfill. In the future, the energy in that gas will be put to beneficial use and will become an economic asset.
