What are you doing to control odors at the landfill?

We’re doing everything possible within the limits of existing technology. Our comprehensive odor control plan covers a variety of measures, including expansion of the active gas-collection system; the use of portable sprayers and prototype foggers to apply anti-odor products around the working face; and installation of odor-reducer sprayers and a deodorizer system.

In 2004 alone, we added 26 new landfill gas extraction wells, approximately 6,800 linear feet of six-inch diameter lateral piping that connects the new wells to the active landfill gas system, and approximately 2,000 linear feet of 12-inch diameter header pipe to increase the capacity of the landfill gas system to extract landfill gas from the waste mass and convey it to the flares for combustion. Additionally, approximately 3,700 linear feet of horizontal gas-collection pipe was installed along the western slope of the landfill, primarily to control landfill gas odor.

Conestoga’s improvement of the landfill gas system continued in 2005.  A total of 27 extraction wells were installed, along with approximately 7,400 linear feet of lateral and 3,100 linear feet of header pipe, respectively.  The system currently consists of more than 138 extraction wells across 142 acres.

We also have installed over 5,000 linear feet of high-pressure spray line to dispense odor-neutralizing products and approximately 4,500 linear feet of four-inch diameter hose to deliver warm-air odor-neutralizing products.

We took other steps as well. We voluntarily reduced our intake of sludge by nearly 99 percent. We voluntarily reduced our average daily volume of waste to 5,500 tons per day, a reduction from 7,210 tons per day.
